Day 117(2 days late): Poem 2

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

It’s been quite a while since I wrote my last poem, and I would like to include more writing in this 36 project, although it’s clearly not my forte. This poem is about a pianist’s fingers, because I always am fascinated with watching the way musicians fingers can move across the keys. They always look so effortless, which I, of course, know isn’t true, but I’m always amazed at how much emotion and beauty can come from fingers.

Digital

graceful fingers

dance across their stage

of snow and coal tinted keys.

each digit plays it’s role

in the intricate ballet

with an air of ease that

masks innumerable rehearsals.

all emotion lies in those

calloused yet delicate tips

that can change the mood

with a slightly heavier hand.

they feel every cool key

and know each smooth surface

like their most intimate friends.

friends whose voices mingle

in melodious splendor

with unwavering focus

for their specific role.

these dancers bring color

to their otherwise motionless

and monochromatic stage

and work unitedly

to perform their ballet

as one being

with one purpose.

a musician

in concert.

Day 116(2 days late): Zeitgeist with Mom!!

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

Today’s my last day at home, sadly, because I have to work tomorrow. :( I wanted to do something with my mom, so we decided that she could play guitar with me. I already recorded Zeitgeist by Smashing Pumpkins once acapella, but I really wanted to do it with guitar, so that’s what she did with me! She also jumped in and did some harmony! At the end is her roommate, Jacque, saying “Alright!!” and clapping cause she liked it hahaha!! :D

Zeitgeist

I think that this is one of my all-time favorite SP songs and it was made even better by recording it with my mom!

And now back to the real world of Knoxville!

Day 115(2 days late): O Lord, Hear Me w/ Anna!!

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

As I mentioned yesterday, I am home this weekend! Today, I got to spend pretty much the entire day with my best friend, Anna (pronounced ah-nah :) )! The two of us and our siblings used to get together and sing for hours, making up harmonies and just goofing off, so I decided that Anna needed to be part of my project! We talked a lot about our favorite hymns and things we used to sing, and we decided that the Lenten song “O Lord, Hear Me” was one of our all time favorites. It’s written for four part choir, so we mostly just sang soprano and alto, with Anna sometimes filling in the Tenor parts. At one point, somebody logged into skype and it made a noise, but we decided to just leave it in there… gives it character!

O Lord, Hear Me

I had such a good time singing this! I miss the old days where we just hung out and sang all day, but this was a good taste of that. Hopefully we can do it again next time I’m in town, if she’s here, too!

Day 114(2 days late): Owl/Tree Doodle

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

So! After an insane day at work involving crazy costumers, uncomfortable shoes, and a mouse/rat infestation (true story… uggghhhh…), I drove straight to my home town. So, I haven’t had a moment to post until now! This is a fairly simple post. Just me doodling while talking to my mom and her roommate. I drew an owl in a tree with a bunch of leaves flying around.

The owl says “WhoooooOOO!!!” :D

Yep. That’s all I got! Hope to get in a couple of posts tomorrow with a possible collaboration with my best friend?! (haven’t asked her yet, but I think she’ll be game :) )

Day 113(2 days late): Sweet Roll FAIL!

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

I’m beginning to think that I’m a failure in the kitchen. Or rather, I think I just lack adequate cooking supplies. That, and the fact that my oven does not cook at the temperature you set it at. I’m constantly burning things in it. Grrrr…

At any rate, I’m starting a diet on the 1st, so I’ve been trying to get rid of all the bad foods in my apartment for less temptation. I decided that I would make the tube of sweet rolls in the fridge for work tomorrow… and then I thought, why not make the rolls into the shape of something and use it for my 365 project!! (That’s how my brain works now… how can I make this creative??) So I decided, since I work at a paint store, why don’t I make a paint can? So I did! Here it is before baking

I swirled two of the rolls together to make the lid and smushed one to make the base with half of another roll. The other half became the handle.

So I put them in the oven at 400 degrees just like it says and set my timer for 15 min, following the directions. At about 12 minutes in, I decided to check on them because I’ve issues with stuff burning in my oven in the past… and they looked like this.

BURNED!!! Arrrgggg…. I hate my oven!! But I decided, I might as well ice them and eat them myself (if they were edible) over the next few days rather than throw them out, so, using a knife, I tried to write Benjamin Moore on the can. I realized very quickly that in order to even remotely see the icing, I would have to write it bigger, so I was able to fit the BE and part of the N and then just the M and 2 o’s…. But you still couldn’t really see it…

Soooo… I ended up just icing the whole thing. No need to waste the tasty icing!

I think a couple of them might still be okay to take to work, but even if they’re not, they’ll get eaten eventually! It doesn’t look at all like a paint can in the final result, but at least the raw dough sort of does!

Yesterday I got really caught up in working on something for a later project, and completely forgot to do one at all to post!! So, sorry, I’m yet another day behind… but I hope to catch up later tonight!

For this post, I wanted to do something else acapella with multiple parts, because I just love doing it so much!! So, I looked through all my sheet music and came across I Believe (be careful… that link has nudity and sexual content… FYI!) from Spring Awakening. That song has several parts that intertwine and overlap each other, so I thought it would be an interesting one to try acapella! So I gave it a shot! I couldn’t sing the low “there is love in heaven” round part where it was written, so I just sang it up an octave. I think it turned out pretty well!

I Believe

Enjoy!

More posts coming later tonight!

Day 111(2 days late): Veni Sancte Spiritus

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

For this post I wanted to do something from my church music. We have a supplemental hymnal in my church called Wonder Love and Praise that we use a lot in the “family” service. It has a lot of hymns in it that are called Taizé, which is a music style developed from a monastic order in France. The hymns are very chant like in that the choir usually has something they repeat over and over in harmony while cantors sing the verses on top of that. I really love when we do this style of music at my church, because it’s so free-form and easy to fit you own melodies into the chanting background. We often do these hymns during communion and would take turns singing versus and playing improvised melodies oboe, horn, violin, flute, or whatever instruments happened to be there that day. And it always turns out awesome! And because it’s sort of chant-like, you can make it as long or as short as you need!

This hymn is number 832 in Wonder Love and Praise, and is called Veni Sancte Spiritus, which means Come, Holy Spirit. When we sang this in family choir, we would usually start with just the sopranos, then add in each part until all four parts were there and do the opposite at the end so it was just soprano left. I did it the same way! I moved the key up a bit from where it’s written so I would be able to sing the tenor part a little bit better, but there was no way I was going to be able to sing the bass part. I ended up just singing it up an octave and then taking it down in Garage Band…. it’s sounds sort of like a robot, but I felt it was necessary to have it for the dissonant chords.

Veni Sancte Spiritus

I really loved doing this and will probably do more Taizé and church music!

Anna Grace

I’m going to make this brief because I’m in a really terrible mood and feeling really sore today…

Anyways, since I hadn’t gotten around to sending off the quilt squares for Skull-A-Day yet (don’t worry, I’m sending them in the morning!!), I decided to do one more. I had this elaborate plan to use some of my big paint chips as a collage, but it failed miserably and I just got frustrated, so I went to plan B. I’ve got a few cute hole punches for scrap booking that I’ve somehow ended up with (and kept), so I decided I would make skulls using those. I used an old ripped black tank-top for the background and then just played around with the punches and attached them with hot-glue! Pretty simple, but I like the way it turned out and I picked the colors to complement the other squares I’ve done.

Abstracted skull shape in the middle with the orange elephants and then more skulls surrounding with yellow stars and red asterisks.

I’ll catch up eventually, but there’s been some serious neglect in my house keeping since I’ve been pretty sore lately. I’ll keep trying to do 1 post a day, but it will probably not be until Friday when I get caught up.

Day 109(2 days late): Photoshop Fun 3!

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

I decided to do another fun collage in photoshop since I have my computer back! This one is underwater themed :)

I basically just found the background image and then searched “people underwater” and things like that for the other image. There are two pictures from America’s Next Top Model, plus Prudence from Across the Universe. I also added the naked baby from Nirvana’s Nevermind album cover. It seemed appropriate haha! And to top it all off, a polar bear in the middle!

Enjoy! I’m going out to the pool!

I realized a few days ago that the deadline for Skull-A-Day’s Skull Quilt Project is this Sunday, a week from today, and I had still to mail them all in! I’ve already made 3 other quilt squares, but I decided I needed one more since the proceeds from auctioning the quilts goes towards Becky’s Fund. My original goal was 6 squares, but the deadline sort of crept up on me and this last one took awhile!

Anyways, for the square, I used the same fabric from the 1st square as my 12×12″ base. Then, using a blue yarn, I crocheted a square that was roughly 10×10″, alternating between a shell stitch and double stitch. I used the shell stitch just so it would go a little faster since they take up more room and to see more of the background, but after I finished the square I thought they sort of looked like the shape of skulls! Here’s a close up with a little help from photoshop to see what I mean!

Hahaha that looks terrible! But you get the idea… I actually started to use a pink yarn and make the little faces on all of the stitches, but I quickly realized that it was going to take forever, so I tore out the yarn and ended up just making one big skull in the middle with the pink yarn. I turned out sort of skinny and stretched out looking because I wasn’t using a pattern and the way the yarn stretched, but I’m still pretty happy with it! I then just stuck the crocheted part to the fabric with some hot glue. I decided it needed a bow, so I used a scrap piece of the orange fabric from the second and third quilt squares and made a simple one with it just by folding and wrapping. I glued that down as well and I was done!

I think it turned out really well and all of the squares will be a great addition to the quilts!
