Day 167(2 days late):Puff the Magic Dragon

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

Here’s another short little ukulele recording to try and make up some posts. It’s the song Puff the Magic Dragon by Peter, Paul and Mary. I remember singing this song at camp a lot. Whenever someone suggested it, there was usually a big groan from the campers (usually the boys), but we would always end up swaying together and holding hands while singing it, or even crying, particularly if it was the last day of camp. :(

Puff the Magic Dragon

There are different interpretations of this song’s meaning, but I like to think of it being about growing up and losing our imaginations and fun. I think at 23 I’m still holding onto childhood things pretty well, mostly through this blog and the creative outlet it has given me!

Day 166(3 days late): It Had To Be You

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

I came across the ukulele chords for this song and immediately knew I needed to record it. I love old jazz and I used to have this old Harry Connick Jr. CD that had a version of It Had To Be You on it that I loved! (also on that CD or another HCJr CD was She… which I love love love… may cover that one at some point :) Best bass riff ever!!) This song also makes me think of this scene from A League of Their Own (which is one of my all-time favorite movies!) where they get Marla Hooch drunk and she sings this to Nelson on stage hahahahaha!!!!!

At any rate, I sang it with ukulele! I stumbled over the chords a bit, but it’s alright still I think.

It Had To Be You

Just a quick little post, but I hope to get one more in tonight!

Day 165(4 days late): God Be In My Head

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

So sorry, but I missed another day yesterday. I was having a hard time deciding what to do and by the time I decided, my internet was being stupid. So, at any rate, I’m another day behind. I’ll try and get at least one more post in today, but I’ve got a lot on my plate right now, so I don’t expect to catch up any time this week. Maybe next week? We’ll see.

Anyways, I searched for awhile online trying to find more acapella music that wouldn’t cost me anything… which is apparently really hard to find! I finally came across an arrangement of God Be In My Head by D G Mason (whoever that is). I was expecting it to be like the traditional hymn we sang in my church, but it was completely different. I liked the arrangement of it, so I decided to use it anyways! I had to adjust the Men’s part in a couple of places and bring it up and octave because I couldn’t sing that low, but I think it turned out fine!

God Be In My Head

I’m actually really happy with the way this turned out, especially since it was a version I’d never heard before! I love singing harmonies and singing acapella, so this was a good find!

Day 164(3 days late): Boat Painting Day 3

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

So I finally finished painting all the little sections of this paint-by-number of the Queen Anne. Today I finished up painting all of the mixed colors. Here’s how it turned out.

This clearly looks nothing like the cover of the box it came in… For one thing, I think the colors it came with are waaaaayyy off. Or at least, the mixtures are not just 1 to 1 ratios. Also, they obviously did a lot of blending of colors, but I barely had enough of every color to just fill in the shapes, so how are you supposed to be able to blend them well? And the paint dries so fast, you can’t blend them much at all, and your paint palette wouldn’t last long enough to do it! So, because of all this, I think I’m just going to leave this as is. Not sure what I’ll do with it, but it was interesting to work on. I really did like doing it, because I love to paint, but acrylic paints are not my friend, so this didn’t really turn out like I wanted. I love using oils because they don’t dry nearly as fast so you can blend more!! At any rate, I got a mostly completed painting of the Queen Anne, so we’ll leave it at that. I’ve done other paint-by-numbers in the past that look like actual paintings, without blending the colors, so this one was just a strange one. In fact, I remember doing one in high school of some pansies that my friend thought was an actual, unique painting! I probably should have looked at it a bit more closely before buying this one, but oh well!

Moving on with life…

Day 163(3 days late): Boat Painting Day 2

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

So… I’ve fallen a couple more days behind. But, Friday night I went straight from work to dinner with some friends and then to see Harry Potter 7 part 2 (which I thought was pretty awesome!), and I didn’t get home until around 1. And then yesterday was the most insane day at work EVER, so when I went to my friend’s house afterwards, I ended up falling asleep for like 3 hours… so, sorry! But I’ll catch up ASAP!

So today, I’m still working on the Paint-By-Number of the Queen Anne. In the last post I had gotten all the pure colors straight from the containers painted. Today I started on the mixed colors. I got through all the colors mixed with the 1′s, 2′s and 3′s, but I still have a ways to go. This is taking a lot longer than I thought!! So, here’s where the painting is at thus far.

So, that’s all I got to today, but I hope to finish this up tomorrow… but we’ll see!

Day 162(1 day late): Boat Painting Day 1

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

For whatever reason, this week has turned into paint by number week! Continuing with that theme today, I decided to go to Hobby Lobby and get a paint by number to actually paint. I ended up choosing a scene with the ship Queen Anne, because honestly it was the least cheesy looking one! So, I started working on it at home and quickly realized it was going to take a lot longer than I thought. I worked on this for about 3 hours and only got through all the basic colors, not the mixed ones. So! This is going to span over a couple of days of posts… But, here’s what I’ve got so far.

So, it looks completely different than the image on the box… Obviously after I get all of the base colors I’m going to have to go back in and do some serious blending, which is sort of hard with the crappy brush and paints they give you, but I’ll make it work! If I just leave it with the shapes just filled in, I think it will look really strange and cartoonish, so we’ll see how it goes!

Now to bed and I’ll keep working on this tomorrow!

Day 161(1 day late): Paint-By-Number

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

After doing the skull-by-numbers from Skull-A-Day for the last post, I thought I’d try and make my own Paint-By-Number! So I found an image I liked and that wouldn’t be too many colors, and took it into photoshop. I used the cutout filter to simplify it, and then created used the Accented Edges to make the edges stand out. I finally just used the magic wand tool to select the main colored spaces, but not the out lines, and deleted them. I changed the lines to a blue so you could see them better.

Click on the image to make it bigger and feel free to download it and print it out! You’ll have to mix the paint colors, but you wouldn’t have to stick with that scheme. Just use colors with similar tone and you’re set! Here’s a little copy of the finished product if you don’t want to mess with painting it :)

It’s an Eames Molded Plywood Chair!

This ended up taking awhile to do, and I’m still not quite sure how Noah from Skull-A-Day made the blue lines of his, but I did the best I could without taking it into Illustrator, which always just frustrates the hell out of me. But, I’m pretty happy with it! Be sure to email me any pictures of this if you make it!

Day 160(2 days late): Skull-By-Numbers

Posted by annagrace under Days 1-100

So… I’m now 2 days behind because I came home after work last night and promptly fell asleep!! I woke up about 2 hours later and just moved from my couch to the bed and slept until this morning. I was so tired from work! But anyways, I had today off, so I’m going to try and get at least 2 posts in between packing boxes in preparation for my move next month…

So, I originally decided to do this project for today because I thought it wouldn’t take very long… boy was I wrong about that! But, I’ll get more into what a did in a minute. As you all know, my major inspiration for this 365 project was Skull-A-Day. I decided to pay homage to that site today and do Noah’s Skull-By-Numbers from the original 365 project. Here it is as he presented it:

So, I took the downloadable pdf that Noah posted into photoshop and filled in all the colors with duotone variations of the ornamental skull that was also in the original year, seen below.

Seems simple enough, right? That’s what I thought, too. But It took awhile to select all the little areas to be filled in, and then when I was adjusting the colors of the pattern, photoshop kept crashing for some reason… grrrrr! So, instead of it taking maybe 30 min, it took about 2 hours. At any rate, here’s the finished product!

As always, click to see it bigger! I think it turned out pretty sweet looking! You were probably like me and thought that it was going to be 2 or more skulls when looking at the original pdf, but Noah used some trickery and fooled us all, because it was just one! But a really neat image at that! He says on the blog how he created this, so I might try my hand at it for one of my projects!

Hope to get at least one more post in today, so stay tuned!

Day 159(1 day late): Hey Jude (Acapella Trio)

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

So… I lied. I said I was going to get another post in last night, and it just didn’t happen, mostly due to stupid technical difficulties. But, at any rate, here’s a post now and I’ll hopefully catch up over the rest of this week.

As you should know by now, I love The Beatles! I mean, what’s not to love? I also love acapella harmonies, so I searched for awhile for a good multi-part acapella piece that was in my range and when I came across an arrangement of Hey Jude for two sopranos and an alto, I pretty much had to do it! So, it’s pretty self-explanatory, but just a heads up; I sort of botched the end “better, better, better” part because it happens so suddenly and it was at a page turn.. so just ignore the awkward moment of silence. :) Also, I really wanted to adjust the volume levels at different parts of this so that when the various voices have the melody, they’re the loudest, but every time I tried to do that, it made the file waaaayyy too big, and it would crash when saving, so it’s all about the same volume, but I’m pretty happy with it anyway!

Hey Jude

Eh, I was having issues with my voice, but it’s all good.

I promise I’m catching up… at some point. But at the moment, I’m having serious issues with my car, so I’m just trying to figure that out for now…. slightly preoccupied. But, I’ll catch up when I can!!

Day 158(1 Day late): Cooler Than Me

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

This song was super duper easy, since it was only 2 chords, but I really love it for some reason. It’s Mike Posner’s Cooler Than Me. This song is just so dang catchy!!! So, when I found the chords for it, I had to do it.

Cooler Than Me

Sorry this is such a short post… It’s been a long week and I’m just trying to make up for the day I missed. Stay tuned for today’s post a bit later!!
