Create A Day

One creative project every day for a year

Archive for August, 2011

As you may already know, my mother is the professor of horn at ASU. She and the other brass professors are hosting a Brass Invitational, so mom asked if I would do a quick logo/t-shirt design for the event! I’ve done some logo design for mom before, so when they struggled to find something they liked, mom suggested using me to help! She didn’t want me to spend too long on it, so I just did a simple, straight-forward design with silhouettes of the brass instruments at the bottom. Very simple, but I think less is more in this case and it will look super sleek on a t-shirt!

This is just the first draft, so Ill post any updates I make!

Day 188(8 days late): Time After Time

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

I going to make this quick because I’m super tired…

I wanted to do something musical for this post, but quickly realized that I couldn’t play ukulele with a cast on my left hand… So I hunted around for awhile until I came across a good 4 part a cappella song I could do… Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time!! So I wrote out all of the parts and recorded each of them individually. Well, all lot of the rhythms were super hard, so I screwed up quite a bit, but here’s my best shot, for now!!

Day 187(8? days late): Cast Doodles

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

I think I’m 8 days behind, but I’m not sure… I’ve gotten a couple more days behind from continuing to unpack and move in, and then I hurt my wrist on Saturday at a party. Well I finally went to the university health clinic today, and after xrays discovered that I had broken my arm!! So, I had to get s cast for it, and I decided that cast needed to be decorated! So I went to my friend, Brian’s house with a bunch of permanent markers and got to doodling! I admit that he did most of the drawing, But I had some creative input!

Theres a lot going on here that I could explain, But I’m on Hydrocodone and super loopy, so I’m going to bed… But I do think the unicorn is my favorite part!

Day 186(6 days late): Baby Baby Redux

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

In honor of the fact that I’ve made it halfway through this 365 project , I thought I’d go back to the beginning with another rendition of Baby Baby by Amy Grant! You may recall that my first post ever on my birthday was a techno version of the song! Well, I decided to take the same song and change the effects a bit!

I first completely redid the drum beats and replaced them with some that weren’t so club-like. Then I played around with the effects on the piano parts a bit and change the “zapper” noise from the first version to a congo groove. Finally, I recorded the vocal part and did a little “epic diva” effect on it! :)

Baby Baby 2

I sort of botched the end part, but it’s all good! And I realized just now after watching the video that my versions are quite a bit faster, but I went by the tempo it said on the sheet music. I had fun recreating that first post and think I may do one more version of it towards the end of the project!

Day 185(7 days late): Crackle Nail Polish Review

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

I don’t know how creative you would consider painting one’s nails with something straight from a bottle, but I tried a few different color combinations, so I’m going to treat this as a writing piece and write a review.

By the way, sorry I’m a few more days late… I’ve been unpacking a lot and just had company in town, so I didn’t have time for posts! Expect at least one more post today!

So the other day I bought Sally Hansen’s Crackle Overcoat in Snow Blast and my friend bought it in Fushia Shock. I also bought a bottle of Revlon Top Speed in Peachy to use as my base color…. and it looked a lot more coral in the store, but at Whitney’s apartment it looks waaaayyy more peachy like the name and one the verge of UT orange on your nails!! Which wasn’t what I was going for, but I just went with it. Just a side note real quick: I absolutely FAIL at painting nails!! And add to that the fact that I bite my fingernails and I didn’t think it would turn out well at all… so keep that in mind!

So I started by doing 2 base coats of the peachy on all my nails– toes and fingers. I wasn’t too worried about how well it covered, but I did 2 coats anyways just because I didn’t want it to look like crap! :D After that, I just globbed on the Snow Blast Crackle Overcoat! It’s a lot thicker than normal polish, so it’s sort of hard to work with, but I think that the whole point is for it to look different on every nail. It says on the bottle that you can do one coat of different thicknesses for different effects, but it was so hard to work with that whatever was on my brush was how much I put on! Here’s my big toe in action!

It was pretty cool because you could see it crackling! I could watch that for like hours! And here’s both my feet done.

I wasn’t really sure that I liked this combo too much… maybe for game day at UT with an attempt at a very light coat of the white, but I think it looks sort of strange to have that much white on my toes… I did my fingers, too, and it looked even more ridiculous!! So bad I’m not even posting a picture… While I was doing this, Whitney did her toes with a really bright orange as a base and the pink crackle. Well, they were so similar in tone, that it just ended up looking like lumpy toenails with clumpy paint on them!! She ended up using a white base like you would use for french manicures and putting the pink over the top. That time it looked pretty awesome! (sorry, no pic…) Then she tried hot pink polish with the white crackle on her fingers, and again it just looked lumpy! We decided in general that we liked it better on her toes. After that, I decided to try something else on my fingers just to experiment, and used the peachy color as a base and the hot pink crackle on top. I think it actually turned out pretty neat on my nubby little fingernails! Very bright but I like it!

These pictures really don’t show how bright they are! But it’s fun! And I think there was just enough contrast to where it didn’t look so lumpy and looked more purposeful. I still have my fingers that way! After that, I decided to try one more thing on my toes and did this really dark purply/blue color that Whit had with the white over top. I think the big contrast made it a bit better, but next time I need to get it more in all the corners. And it sort of looks like cracked zombie toes, hahaha!!

So bad… and yet I still have my toes like that! I think I might try this navy blue I have with a light coat of the white, or a teal blue with the white next.

Overall, my review of this product is so, so. If you get the right combination of colors and the perfect amount of the overcoat, it can look great! But so many of the combos we tried came out super funky, and the stuff was so hard to work with and get an even coat. It would probably also help if I wasn’t so terrible at painting fingernails!! I think I might buy this product again… but I think the white is a little too stark and I might go with the silver color next time. I’m going to experiment with this some more and see if I can come up with a really epic combo!

Day 184(5 days late): Random Unpacking Doodle

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

I finally found my calendar I use for this 365 project to see what day I’m on, or supposed to be on, and figured out that I’m still 5 days behind as of today’s second post… :( But that’s how it goes with packing and moving…

Speaking of packing and moving, today I was digging through boxes trying to find something to do for the blog, and came across an old sharpie, a red felt-tip pen, and a bottle of white out in one of the little storage cubes I had in my desk. I decided after that to just do a quick doodle using those first things I found! So I started out with the sharpie, which was apparently dying… and I drew some sort of organic swoopy shapes. I then went back with the white-out and highlighted some areas of the swoops, did little dots around the ends, made flowers and sort of sponge painted around the base of the organic sharpie swoops. Then, because you couldn’t really see white out that well, I came in with the red pen and just added a simple line contour to all of the white parts and then smeared in some red around the base. And here’s the finished product! (with and without flash… I had a hard time getting a decent picture of it…)

A very simple post, but I think it’s kind of pretty! I liked the way the red pen looked different on the paper than on spots where there was white out. It didn’t really soak in like it normally would, so it gives it almost a watercolor effect!

Seriously???? I’m already half-way through this project??? I CAN’T BELIEVE IT!!!! Crazy…

As always, I made a recap video of this month’s projects!

Thanks all of you for bearing with me on this… I know it’s been somewhat spotty with lots of missed days, but I will be done with 365 posts on February 2, 2012, you can count on that! I’ll just have to do multiple posts on some days to catch up! But it’s been a great ride so far and I’m excited to come up with another 6 months worth of creative projects!!

Day 182(?? days late): Camp Songs 4

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

Wrapping up this bunch of songs from my childhood camp is One Tin Soldier! This one is another one that’s calmer, but beautiful and with a really good message! got off to sort of rocky start and changed the key mid-phrase, but I think it turned out pretty well! :)

One Tin Soldier

I’m including another one we called the “Goodnight Song” that we used to sing at the end of the night before we went down to our cabins. I love the Goodnight song and I’ll often use it when I’m babysitting to get the kids to take a nap! I like to think that one day, when I have my own kids, singing this song will become a bedtime tradition :)

Day 180(?? days late): Camp Songs 2

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

The next song in this series of acapella camp songs is Pharaoh, Pharaoh! I used to especially love singing this song because we had the awesome dance moves that went with it, kinda like these kids did it, but on the “let my people go” part we did “the butterfly” haha! :D Ya’ll 90s kids have to know the butterfly! I especially remember TLC doing it a lot, particularly in the Creep video, although the version we did was a lot less sexy lol. RIP Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes!! Anyways, here’s Pharaoh Pharaoh!

Pharaoh Pharaoh

So, pretty self-explanatory post, but just trying to catch up a bit!
