Day 276: Complicated

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

Today I was searching for good songs for ukulele and I came across the chords to Avril Lavigne’s Complicated! Now, I’m not a huge fan of Avril, but I thought why not take this song from wannabe emo to a more gentle sort of ballad. So I slowed it down a hair and plucked out the chords note by note instead of strumming. I sort of botched them a bit, but it was hard, so bear with me! I recorded the ukulele in one take and then the myself singing over top of that. The end is awkward, but c’est la vie!

I think, all things considered, this turned out well! It’s a different take on the song, but I dig it!

Day 275: Pumped Up Kicks

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

For this project I searched around one of my favorite uke chords/tabs blogs, Ukulele Hunt, for something new to try. When I saw Foster the People’s Pumped Up Kicks, I knew I had to do it because it’s just so darn catchy! And the song has a super light-hearted feel to it, but if you pay attention to the lyrics, that’s not necessarily the case, and I love that juxtaposition!

My version of it is a much more simplified take of it. I just started by recording the chords on the ukulele and looping it to fit the song. Then I recorded myself singing and the little riff on the uke at the same time. I sort of jacked up the words at the end and kept saying “outrun my bullet” instead of “faster than my bullet,” but I only wanted to do one take because I’m still not feeling very good. :(

Pumped Up Kicks

All things considered, I think it turned out pretty good! I’ll definitely have the chorus stuck in my head for a few days though!

I also wanted to post a pic of today’s juice I made, because it was such an interesting color! Like yesterday, here’s before and after stirring it up.

This juice had a handful of carrots, three handfuls of spinach, about few sprigs of cilantro, 2 small fiji apples, a third of a cucumber and half a mango! It was super tasty and the cilantro gave it a nice zing without killing my throat!

Day 274: Fresh Juice

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

For my birthday this year my sister gave me money to get a juicer! Juicing is something she’s really gotten into lately and she even did a 10 cleanse where she juiced for every meal! Drinking fresh fruit and vegetables is a really great way to be more healthy and something I’ve been wanting to try for awhile, so I decided that for lent this year I was going to juice for at least one meal every day! I’m starting a day late because I have strep throat and felt to bad to do anything yesterday, but better late than never! I probably won’t post every juice I make as a daily creative project, but I was so excited about this first attempt at juicing that I had to post it!

The juice I made today contained:

1 small Fiji apple
2 small oranges
2 handfuls of baby carrots (had them from awhile back)
1/2 mango
1/3 cucumber
1″ section fresh ginger root

I took a picture straight from the juicer and then one after stirring it up because you can really tell that the cucumber was one of the last things I put it!

I have to tell you, this was pretty awesome! Next time I may use less orange, more apple because it was a little citrusy, but it was tasty! I’ll also probably lay off the ginger for a few days because I LOVE it, but it hurt my throat sooooo bad!

Juicing is a pretty major undertaking in that it takes awhile to prep everything and then the clean up is hard, but it tastes soooo good! And I know for sure I don’t get the fruits and vegetables I need every day, so I could see this making me feel better over time!

Day 273: My Favorite Things

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

For this post, I used my good old Broadway favorites book and recorded My Favorite Things from the Sound of Music! I used the chords listed and played them on the ukulele. I recorded myself singing and playing at the same time in one take.

My Favorite Things

I’m super happy with how this turned out! This song is often associated with Christmas music for some strange reason, I guess because of the snowflakes? But I think it’s great for any season and has a good message!

Day 272: Leo Drawing

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

Continuing in my Zodiac colored pencil drawings, today I drew Leo! This one a started awhile ago, but never finished, so I just completed what I had started. I made her hair all poofy and sticking out like a lions mane and then put some animal ears on her head. The face is a little awkward, but I drew it too dark to be able to fix it. Then when I was writing out Leo, I accidentally started to write Libra by accident!! So, to mask that, I ended up shading around the word with a dark gray, so it’s sort of muddied, but I think all and all it turned out okay!

Day 271: Gemini Drawing Take 2

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

You may recall that a while back, I was creating drawings that were personifications of the zodiac signs! I haven’t finished that series yet (working on it…), but before I do, there was one drawing I really wasn’t happy with and wanted to redo… the Gemini. In the original drawing, I tried doing the hair differently than the other drawings in the series, and failed miserably. The whole thing just came out as a muddy mess! So I decided to try again!

I looked back through my sketchbook and found one of my original ideas for the drawing with the twins’ hair intertwining together instead of just sort of mushing together. It looked a ton better that the drawing I ended up with, so I just continued from that sketch and finished it! Not really sure what I didn’t like about it originally, but whatevs.

I think this turned out really great and definitely much, much better than the original drawing! I hope to finish this series of drawings this week!

Day 270: And Then There Were None

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

Today’s song come from my favorite musical, which you all know by now… Spring Awakening! This song is And Then There Were None. I had sort of avoided this song until now because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to tackle the speaking part (Melchior’s mother) and the Moritz’s singing in one song, but after trying it a few times, it just wasn’t the same without the spoken part, so I had to do it!

I started out by putting all of the piano parts into Garage Band and then I recorded the spoken part. I had to mess with the lengths of some of the piano parts to get things to line up right, but eventually worked it out. I then started to add the vocal part on top, but I quickly realized the original key was too low for me, so I bumped it up a 5th and went on my merry way! After that, I recorded the background vocals and was done!

And Then There Were None

I think this turned out pretty good! And it’s one more song off the Spring Awakening soundtrack I can scratch off my list!

Day 269: Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

Tonight I decided to watch the new season of “The Voice” on NBC, which was awesome, but it was followed by a new show called “SMASH.” This show is about a bunch of people who come together to create a musical about Marilyn Monroe and I have to tell you, I was inspired! I realized that sometimes I don’t sing at my full power because I’m afraid of going for it and screwing up, so I decided I was going to just belt something! I pulled out “The Best of Broadway” song book and decided upon “Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’” from the musical Oklahoma! This may seem like a strange choice considering I was just watching a show about a new, sexy musical, but I really wanted to go old school with this one and back to one of the old, cheerful musicals!

So I just recorded myself singing a cappella on my iPad first, then I added the guitar part in afterwards! Quick and easy, but I really feel like I was pushing!

Oh, What A Beautiful Morning’

You know, the more songs I do, the more I really think my voice fits the musical style versus something more poppy or rock and roll. At least that’s how it is right now. I need to work on using the same power I use when singing musicals and translating it to the other styles…. just something to think about!

If you haven’t seen “The Voice” or “SMASH” you totally should! I was really inspired by both shows, and I think you will be too!

Day 268: 5 Truths About Fear Painting/Collage

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

As you all know by now, for Christmas, birthdays, and pretty much any occasion where gifts are called for, I usually make them! My sister, Katherine definitely knows this to be true, so before Xmas and her birthday back in December, she asked me to create a painting/poster/drawing or something that had these words on it from a book she was reading. You’re supposed to say these 5 Truths About Fear several times throughout the day, so she wanted something that said them.

Here’s the words in case you can’t read them:

1. The fear will never go away as long as I continue to grow.
2. The only way to get rid of the fear of doing something is to go out… and do it.
3. The only way to feel better about myself is to go out… and do it.
4. Not only am I going to experience fear whenever I’m on unfamiliar territory, but so is everyone else.
5. Pushing through fear is less frightening than living with the underlying fear that comes from a feeling of helplessness.

I started out with just painting the canvas with a blue sample jar miss tint that I had in hand, then I used a crackle finish over that. Unfortunately, it didn’t show up very well, so I moved to plan B of decoupaging some pieces of tissue on top of that. And then I just wrote the words on it with a metallic silver Sharpie and I was done! I think it turned out pretty well, and now I just have to mail it to my sister! Hahahaha… Oops. In my defense, I DID have surgery right before Christmas, so, yeah. I’m terrible, but I will be sending it ASAP!

Day 267: Such Great Heights

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

Anybody who knows me knows that Such Great Heights by Postal Service is one of my favorite songs ever! It’s just such a great song to dance and rock out to! I came across the chords and tabs to this for ukulele around the time I first started playing, but it was waaaayyyy too hard for me at that point. I accidentally found them again the other day when I was looking for something else and I thought, “I bet I could do that now!” So, I did!

Now, I googled it and found out that the tempo is supposedly 176… which is really freaking fast! I knew that I couldn’t possibly play it that fast, so I slowed it down to 140 bpm, which was much more reasonable. Because of the slower tempo, my version is almost like a cross between the original and the Iron and Wine cover. But anyways, I ended up recording in this multiple tracks to get all the parts in. I started with the 2 really fast parts at the beginning, then I added the strummed chords. The chord progression what slightly awkward at points, so I just down strummed everything. Then I recorded the solo part (I added an extra harmony track that’s not it the tabs I found, but I thought it sounded cool :D ), and the vocals on two tracks so I get could the overlaps right. It’s a little low for me, but I think it turned out pretty good!

Such Great Heights

I had a lot of fun with this recording, but it was honestly one of the hardest things I’ve done for this blog!! My fingers need a break… Hope you enjoy it! I’ll be some more posts tonight!
