Day 297: Collage Painting Day 2

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

I’m really tired so I’m gonna make this short… sorry!

At any rate, today I finished the painting/collage I posted about yesterday. Last night after the mid-tone dried, I painted the lightest tone…. but the sample jar I was using actually ended up DARKER than the mid-tone. I ended up painting it all anyways, just so it would be even, and then I painted over it with a lighter color today. Then, I just painted the darkest color and I was done!! Here’s the final product, with and without flash.

Can you tell what it is?? It’s extremely abstracted and the image was taken at a sort of different angle. I’ll give you a hint: It’s an instrument!

Give up?

Here’s the original image after adjusting it in Photoshop.

Can you tell what it is? It’s a horn!! I used sort of different colors and it ended up even more distorted in my interpretation of it, but I like it!

I made this for my mom for Mother’s Day! Yes, I know. Mother’s Day already happened. BUT I started this BEFORE Mother’s Day and I knew that I wasn’t going to see her until after. So, yeah… it’s done now! BTW my mom plays horn, so I thought this was appropriate! I hope she likes it!

Day 296: Collage Painting Day 1

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

This creative project is going to have to be spread over two posts because it is going to take several steps to get it where I want it. At any rate, you may recall the mosaic painting I did towards the beginning of this 365 project. In that one I took an image in photoshop and distorted it with the paper cutout tool. Then, using that image, I painted one color at time, layering shades until I ended up with the final image! This project is the same, but I wont tell you what the final image is supposed to be until Im done!

Before I get into the process, I have to let you know that I took a lot of pictures during making this over the past few days, but my stupid phone deleted all of them except the last one!!!! So, sorry! But you can at least see where it is at now!

So I started with a plain canvas that I rescued from work which had been painted a really light pink. I took a misstinted sample jar that was a really bright green and did a light coat over the whole thing using a palette knife so it wold have a bit of texture. While it was still wet, I stuck a bunch of 2×3 inch color chips from work that we were throwing away onto the canvas. I stuck them on in a random order, so it didnt look too formal! As the paint dried, the chips started to curl up on the edges, but I decided to leave it as is because I thought it gave it an interesting texture! After that, I decided that all the random colors where a bit too bright for what I was thinking, so I used a gray misstinted sample jar and did a quick wash over everything. THEN I finally started on the actual painting with the mid tone of the three colors I was using. So here is where it is now!

Sorry its an Instagram pic, but thats all I got! I hope to finish this tomorrow!! In the meantime, any thoughts as to what it is??

Day 118(2 days late): Paint Chip Collage Part 1

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

I decided to break this project into 2 parts because I worked on it for hours today and am only done with the first part!!

The past fews weeks at work, I’ve been organizing the big paint chip books. I reordered any that were missing and took out any that were torn, marked up, wrinkled, or otherwise messed up. I swear, I sometimes wonder what the heck people do to these when they check them out… I’ve gotten some returned that look like they’ve been immersed in water, run over by a car,  or dipped in honey!! Why return it then? At any rate, instead on throwing away all the damaged chips, I kept them thinking that I could use them for projects. I ended up with a pretty massive collection, and I finally decided today that I would do something with them, so I did a collage!

I started out with an old canvas that had been painted with a faux finish at work. They were going to toss a few, and I rescued them for projects a while back. I decided that I would do the background in neutral tones progressing from dark on the edges to light in the center. (All the colors were from the Historical Collection because I had the most repeats of those) I basically decoupaged torn pieces to the canvas with a gloss mod-podge that I already had on hand. It took a really long time to do each of the colors and get them to stick well. I finished it off with a final thick coat of the mod-podge in the hopes that it would stick it down better. This took forever to dry!! In fact, it got to midnight and it still wasn’t dry, so I went ahead and took pictures so I could post this and go to bed! Here’s with and without flash so you can see the sheen.

I think it turned out pretty neat! The best part of this project is that it cost me absolutely nothing! (unless you count the mod-podge that I’ve had for over a year) I want to do something on top of all this, but I’m not sure what yet… stay tuned!

I’m (obviously) still behind on posts…. I hope to catch up this weekend!

Day 5: Tissue Collage

Posted by annagrace under Days 1-100

Today’s collage all started with me wanting to have something on either side of my flower painting from day 2. I came across some $1 frames at walmart and decided they would be perfect to fill with something. Here’s one as I bought it:

When I got home, I took out the cheesy family photos and flipped them over to the plain white side. I took some purple tissue paper I got while working at Bags & Bows and cut it into 2 rectangles, then crumpled them up so they didn’t look so perfect. Next, I did the same with the Shadow Damask Tissue (which is my absolute favorite :D ). I also printed out large letters (A,G, and S) in Times New Roman and traced over them on sketch pad paper, then filled them in with silver metallic sharpies. To make it a little more interesting, I tore the letters out and then burned the edges of them (don’t worry… I did this all outside with a bowl full of water ready in case they flared up too much.). The S’s kept burning too much for some reason and just fell apart, so I ended up just using the A’s and G’s. I attached these letters and the wrinkled tissue squares to the back of the stock family photos with double sided tape.
