Day 304: Rolling in the Deep

Posted by annagrace under Days 301-365

I was perusing some ukulele chord/tab sites the other night and came across this amazing instrumental version of Adele’s Rolling in the Deep! I don’t know about you, but I’m a tad sick of Adele since all her songs are on the radio ALL THE TIME!!! But, I think that this ukulele version is worth sharing AND embedding into this post so you all can see how awesome this guy is!

At any rate, I’m nowhere near good enough to play the whole fancy version he tabbed out, so I ended up just recording the chords in the background and the melody over top of that!

Rolling in the Deep

Clearly not as fancy as him, but I liked just doing something on uke without singing for a change! Maybe one day I can rock out like that, but at the moment, my poor joints won’t allow it… :( That and I FAIL at strumming. But hey, it’s all in good fun, so who cares?

Day 303: Ruby Tuesday

Posted by annagrace under Days 301-365

I’ve got a few things to post tonight, so I’m going to make this quick!

This post is quick cover of the Rolling Stones’ Ruby Tuesday! I found the ukulele chords on one of my favorite ukulele sites and went from there! I had to sing the chorus and versus in two different octaves to fit my range.

Ruby Tuesday

I have NO CLUE what that weird noise in the background is… maybe the AC? It’s hot, yall!! Anyways, I really love this song and I hope my quick take of it does it justice. One of my favorite mixed CDs from my friend Brian has this on it!

Look out for at least one more post tonight!

Day 300: Suddenly I See with MOM!!!!!!

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

WE MADE IT TO 300 POSTS!!!!! AHHHHHH!!!! To celebrate, I thought I would post this recording I did with my awesome, creative, talented mother! I went home for the first time in quite awhile last weekend, so I took advantage of the situation! A mutual artist that mom and I like is KT Tunstall, so we decided to cover her song, Suddenly I See!

Mom refused to look up the chords because, as she said, “That takes the fun out of it!” so we listened to it until she figured them out! By the time we got ready to record it, mom’s hands were getting pretty tired on the guitar, but we pressed on! I left the recording exactly as we did it– the full take, without any editing– because I thought it was funny! Mom messed up at the beginning at first, but then started over so fast that I wouldn’t have been able to cut out our talking anyways! And in the middle of the song, I couldn’t figure out exactly how I was supposed to come in on the bridge, so my mom told me to just do it, so I did! You also get to hear us laughing at the end, so I think it’s all fun. :) Mom wanted me to make sure and tell you that guitar isn’t her primary instrument and she’s much better at piano, but I think she did great! We recorded the guitar and me singing first, then recorded mom over that!

Suddenly I See

I think KT wrote this song about some celebrity or something that she wanted to be like, but I think it relates to mom and I well because mom is someone I definitely look up to and hope to be like! Love you, Mama! I had such a good time with you last weekend! :*

Thanks to all of you for bearing with me through 300 posts! It is taking me so much longer than originally planned to do this project, but I’m still enjoying it and having fun, so that’s all that matters, right? 65 more posts to go… I look forward to each and every one!

Day 298: Fireflies

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

This post is a quick rendition of Owl City’s Fireflies with ukulele! For a long time the beginning of this song was my ringtone because it’s just so fun and it was something I knew I would be able to hear in most circumstances. I had to stop using it because I got sick of it, but I think I might use it again since I love it so much!

I found the chords on my favorite ukulele chord resource site! I really do love that site… I could find enough tunes on there to finish my blog if I really wanted to… but I’m not going to do just uke songs! Anyways, I found the chords and ended up just recording it in one shot! Obviously, this is a waaaayyyy simplified version of the song, but I still like the words and melody.

I’m pretty happy with it, especially considering that I didn’t spend much time on it!! I’ve got a few more posts coming up later tonight, including a special song with my mom for the 300th post!! Stay tuned!

Day 295: Broadway

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

The other day I found out that one of the bands I really liked in the 90s, the Goo Goo Dolls, was going to be at Riverbend this year in Chattanooga!! I’m still debating whether I’m going to be able to go or not, but in the mean time I decided to do a quick cover of their song, Broadway!

I just found some fairly simple guitar chords and quickly adapted them for ukulele! The chords I found in a good key were missing some parts, so I just sort of made it up! This is probably one of the fastest recordings I’ve ever done, with just one run through after getting the chords and then one recorded take!

This was definitely a quick and dirty take of this song, but I love the Goo Goo Dolls so much, I thought it was necessary! I hope I can see them, but there are a few things I’ve got to work out first! I’ll definitely let you know if I do go!

Day 294: Rumor Has It/ Someone Like You

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

The last song I purchases sheet music for a couple weeks ago is a mash-up of Adele’s Rumor Has It and Someone Like You that was on Glee! Now, I used to be a pretty avid Glee watcher, but haven’t really gotten into the latest season. Regardless of that, when I found this arrangement, I KNEW I had to do it!

It is arranged for two sopranos, an alto, and a couple solo parts with piano backing. So I started by writing out the piano parts, then wrote out all the other parts in GB. I then recorded all the parts and was done! Some of the transitions are a tad awkward, but considering how quickly I did it, I’m pretty happy with it!

Rumor Has It/Someone Like You

Keep in mind that I recorded this last night at about 3 am because I couldn’t sleep… haha my insomnia gets the best of me! But it worked out ok I think!

Day 293: Apologize

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

One of the 4 songs I bought the sheet music for the other day was One Republic’s Apologize (It’s actually Timbaland ft. One Republic, but really, saying eh eh eh shouldn’t make you the main artist!)! The arrangement I found was a cappella for 2 sopranos, 2 altos, 2 tenors, 1 bass, and one tenor solo part. That’s right. EIGHT individual parts!!! And all of them completely different from each other with syncopated rhythms fitting together to make this crazy background to the solo.

At any rate, this was definitely one that I had to write out all the parts to in GarageBand before recording just so I could get them all down. So I did that one day, and then recorded all the parts the next! The bass part was waaaayyyyy too low for me, so I recorded it up an octave and then brought it down in GB. It’s surprisingly NOT robotic sounding like some of the other times I’ve done that, but it’s a very small and simple part, so that’s probably why. I have to tell you, this whole arrangement was hard. I could see an a cappella group being able to perform this after practicing it for a really, really long time, but for me just listening to and singing the parts a few times, this was super difficult. I would actually be really impressed if I heard a group do this arrangement, because I know how difficult it is! But, at any rate, I finally got all the tracks recorded and here’s how it turned out!

This is another one that you should really listen to with headphones just to hear all the parts! Although, then you’ll hear more clearly when I goofed up… but oh well!! I’m actually pretty happy with how this turned out, all things considered. Just wish some things line up better… On that note does anyone know how to change the metronome in GB to eighth notes versus quarter when you’re recording? That would have helped a LOT! Anyways, hope you enjoy it! I’ve got a few other projects I’m working on right now, but my day off Friday will be spent trying to look for a new apartment!! So, I hope to get a few posts in this weekend!

Day 292: Love Story

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

I decided to purchase several choral arrangements of some songs the other day in celebration of completing undergrad! The site I was using had special deals where you would save more, the more songs you purchased, so I ended buying 4 arrangements. You have already heard one of them with the last post and We Are Young, and the other two you will ust have to wait for!! But the last song I chose was Love Story by Taylor Swift. Now anyone who knows me well knows that I really do NOT like country music, but I really liked this arrangement of the song, so I decided to go with it!

This arrangement was for SSA choir, so in order to get the solos sounding right, I ended up recording a few of each part. I started by putting the piano in GarageBand and then recorded all of the individual parts. I ended up with 10 tracks all together, including the piano!!! So, because there are so many tracks, there is a lot of feedback, but I think I really achieved the whole choir effect! Its a bit strange to hear my voice that much all at once…

Love Story

Considering the fact that I recorded all of these with one take and very little practice, I think this turned out pretty good! It reminded me of my childhood when I was in Dotty’s Children’s Choir back home :) It is a bit out of tune and all over the place, but Im not too worried about it!!

BTW I got a promotion!!! I am now officially a designer for my Benjamin Moore and am doing in home consultations! So, anyone living in the Knoxville area, if you need help picking paint colors, give me a call!

Day 291: We Are Young

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

This creative project is a song that plays on the radio a lot right now, and something I thought would be fun to do! As a matter of fact, the band who sings this song is called Fun! And the song is called We Are Young!

I was reluctant at first to record this song because of the abrupt tempo change. I wasn’t sure how I was going to navigate that in Garage Band, and I definitely needed to write the parts all the way out because I’m I’m not that familiar with how the verses go. But, in a stroke of genius aka I decided to look it up in the GB help section, I figured out how to do tempo changes easily! SUCCESS!! So after putting in all the notes for the melody and the piano part, I decided that this was one occasion where I really needed to have some drums. So I played around a bit and kept listening to the track until I got something pretty similar to the original that I liked. Then I recorded the melody and then the bit of harmony and overlapping on the chorus and I was done!

We Are Young

I had found some ukulele chords to this, but ended up raising the key to fit my range better. The chords in the new key were to awkward on ukulele, so I ended up just leaving the computerized piano. I botched the lyrics a bit at the end, but overall I’m happy with this song and I had FUN doing it!!

Day 290: Telephone

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

So… It’s been quite awhile since I posted last. Over a month in fact. I just gotta say that it’s been CRAZY busy for me the last little bit! I’ve had tons of papers for school and have been working full-time at Ben Moore now. School’s over now and I’m done forever! So I have a little more time now to post and create! Obviously I didn’t meet my deadline of the end of the semester to finish this 365 project, but I’m not too worried about it! My NEW goal is the end of summer, so I’m saying  3 months from today, August 12, I hope to be done!

At any rate I decided that I wanted to do another a cappella song with multiple parts since I hadn’t done one in awhile! I looked for a long time and eventually came across an unexpected song: Telephone by Lady Gaga ft. Beyoncé!! Seems like a strange song to do a cappella, but apparently it was on some episode of the Sing Off, so I guess it’s legit! It was three parts, Soprano, Alto and Tenor/Bass. I first put all of the parts into Garage Band and them recorded them! The lowest part was super low at the beginning and end, so it’s a little rough, and the highest part got pretty high sometimes, but it was still fun to do!

It was hard to catch a breath when singing this! So it’s a little stop and go at some points, and pitchy. Otherwise I’m pretty  happy with it!

I hop to do one more post tonight and definitely at least one tomorrow, so stay tuned!
