Day 300: Suddenly I See with MOM!!!!!!

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

WE MADE IT TO 300 POSTS!!!!! AHHHHHH!!!! To celebrate, I thought I would post this recording I did with my awesome, creative, talented mother! I went home for the first time in quite awhile last weekend, so I took advantage of the situation! A mutual artist that mom and I like is KT Tunstall, so we decided to cover her song, Suddenly I See!

Mom refused to look up the chords because, as she said, “That takes the fun out of it!” so we listened to it until she figured them out! By the time we got ready to record it, mom’s hands were getting pretty tired on the guitar, but we pressed on! I left the recording exactly as we did it– the full take, without any editing– because I thought it was funny! Mom messed up at the beginning at first, but then started over so fast that I wouldn’t have been able to cut out our talking anyways! And in the middle of the song, I couldn’t figure out exactly how I was supposed to come in on the bridge, so my mom told me to just do it, so I did! You also get to hear us laughing at the end, so I think it’s all fun. :) Mom wanted me to make sure and tell you that guitar isn’t her primary instrument and she’s much better at piano, but I think she did great! We recorded the guitar and me singing first, then recorded mom over that!

Suddenly I See

I think KT wrote this song about some celebrity or something that she wanted to be like, but I think it relates to mom and I well because mom is someone I definitely look up to and hope to be like! Love you, Mama! I had such a good time with you last weekend! :*

Thanks to all of you for bearing with me through 300 posts! It is taking me so much longer than originally planned to do this project, but I’m still enjoying it and having fun, so that’s all that matters, right? 65 more posts to go… I look forward to each and every one!

Day 260: Happy Birthday, Mama!!

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

It is my amazing mother’s birthday today!! I have been sick, so I was unable to really put together a good gift just yet, but I decided, for now, to record a quick rendition of Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday is one of those songs that can get extremely boring, because it’s so simple and sung so often, so I tried to spruce it up with the ukulele! I played it 3 times: the first time just straight chords, the second time picking the chords and the third time a more patterned chord strumming! After that, I sang the song we always sing at my church to celebrate birthdays! It’s a nice alternate to the traditional birthday song, and my church family gets so into it with hand motions and everything! :D At any rate, here is the recording…

Happy Birthday Mama!!!

Yay!! So glad I have such a wonderful mother in my life! While she might not be like most moms, I wouldn’t change a thing! Happy Birthday, Mom! Love you!

BTW you’ve probably noticed the serious lack of posts lately… I decided to take a break while I finished up the semester, but now I hope to get back into it! I think I’m going to set a new goal date since I’m so far behind at this point, but I will update you all when I decide what I’m doing!

Day 259: O Come O Come Emmanuel with Mom!

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

After spending a few days in Atlanta with my dad’s side of the family, I came back to Knoxville for a day (I had to work) and then decided to go home to Boone for a few days to see my mom!! I haven’t been home in a really long time… I think the last time was this summer! It’s good to see my mom and go to my church :)

Speaking of church, as always, my mother wanted me to contribute some way with the service music since I was there. I didn’t think to bring my recorders, oboe, or ukulele, but she had a irish penny whistle and suggested I play that! I have my own whistle, so it came back to me quickly! Anyways, I played on several songs during the service, along with singing with the choir, but mom and I did the prelude and postlude just the two of us! This recording is of mom playing piano and myself playing penny whistle to O Come O Come Emmanuel. Today is the first Sunday of the Advent season in the Episcopal church, so it was an appropriate choice! The arrangement was made up last night by my extremely talented mother, but we she just really improvised it. It turned out great I think!

O Come O Come Emmanuel

Kind of a bad recording because we just used my mom’s iPhone. And sorry about how sharp I am… really can’t do anything about that on penny whistle! Those things aside, I think we did a pretty good job and I always love making music with my mama!

Day 203(13 days late): Homemade Salsa with Mom!!

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

Here I was thinking that I was going to use this extra long holiday weekend to catch up on posts, and I just fall even more behind!! In my defense, my mom came to see me this weekend and I have had the most horrible headache for about three days now that I cannot get to go away!! I have tried everything!!

At any rate, when my mom came to town, she surprised me with some fresh vegetables from the garden at our church to make homemade salsa! FYI my mom makes the best salsa EVER so I was totally excited to make it! We even made a quick run to walmart where she got me a cheap little food processor, which I know I will be using a lot!

We started by sauteing some chopped garlic in oil. You can leave it raw if you want, but I think it makes it a little too strong, so I cooked it! Next, we chopped up about a third of a large sweet onion into big chunks, then chopped them up a lot more in the food processor. After draining the excess water off, we mixed the onion and garlic. Then we chopped up a small beautiful purple bell pepper (red bell peppers are fine) and added it to the mix. Loved the added touch of color it gave it and I wish you could see it better in the picture!

Next,we cut up two tomatoes from church and two tomatoes from the store into quarters and put those through the food processor as well and drained them.

We didnt have quite enough tomato, so we used this beautiful yellow tomato that was also from church and added it to the mix!

It gave the salsa a very interesting color, and almost made it look like mango salsa! Then we chopped up a bunch of cilantro and added about half of it in at first with a little salt. As mom says, you have to taste your salsa at this point even before you add any heat, because if your base isn’t right it will screw everything up! So after testing it,we decided it needed more cilantro! Now,we LOVE cilantro, so we may have put more than your average person, but you just have to do everything to  taste!

Last, we chopped up a pretty red jalepeno from church and added it a spoonful at a time until it got to the heat we wanted it! We ended up using one whole pepper, but we have noticed that the store bought peppers are usually not as spicy as home grown, so you may have to use a lot more and/or supplement with a bit of habenareo pepper. Also keep in mind that as the salsa sits in your fridge or whatever, it gets more and more spicy! Here is the finished product!

It is so yummy!!! Mom says it is the best batch she has ever made, and I think the fresh home grown veggies make all the difference! We like to use the blue corn chips because they tend to be a little stronger and can hold the salsa better! And like I said, it gets hotter as it sits…. what was fairly mild  yesterday was pretty hot today! I am looking forward to having this for lunch at work  tomorrow!

Day 122(1 day late): Amazing Grace

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

This morning I opened my front door and a package was sitting there… it was my graduation present from my mom!! She got me a…. ukulele!!!

This may seem like a really random gift, but when I was home last weekend, I was fooling around on mom’s guitar and I told her that I really wanted to learn guitar, but it hurt my hands too much. She said, “Why don’t you try ukulele? I bet the smaller frets would be easier on you.” So she bought me one! Yay!!

I’ve pretty much always had the ability to pick up any string instrument and pick out a melody fairly easily, but the thing I wanted to learn most was strumming. I can strum down, but I have a lot of issues with going back up! That, and I have a hard time transitioning from chords. You’d think that playing violin for 7 years would make that easier, but no such luck! So, hopefully, this ukulele will help with both of those issues!

I wanted to start of easy with just some simple chords, so I decided to do Amazing Grace. I messed up a bit, but I’ve been messing around with the ukulele way to much today, so my fingers are pretty sore… Gotta build back up those callouses I had when I played violin! I just recorded the melody over top of that (with this song, I could potentially sing while playing, which is another thing I want to learn to do, but I didn’t want to screw it up!!), and then ad-libbed a harmony over that. I was making it up as I went, so sometimes the harmony is a little wacky, but I think it turned out pretty well, all things considered!!

Amazing Grace

I would love to eventually build up to singing and playing this song at the same time, but we’ll see!

Day 116(2 days late): Zeitgeist with Mom!!

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

Today’s my last day at home, sadly, because I have to work tomorrow. :( I wanted to do something with my mom, so we decided that she could play guitar with me. I already recorded Zeitgeist by Smashing Pumpkins once acapella, but I really wanted to do it with guitar, so that’s what she did with me! She also jumped in and did some harmony! At the end is her roommate, Jacque, saying “Alright!!” and clapping cause she liked it hahaha!! :D

I think that this is one of my all-time favorite SP songs and it was made even better by recording it with my mom!

And now back to the real world of Knoxville!

Day 98(2 days late): Mother’s Day Present!

Posted by annagrace under Days 1-100

So, I’m a little late on this, considering Mother’s Day was on Sunday and it’s now Wednesday, but things got pretty crazy, so I’m just now getting to this… at any rate, I didn’t see my mom on Mother’s day, but will see her Friday!

Anyways, for my mom I decided to use the other hand casting from Day 66. For this one, I sanded it just like the one for my dad as much as I could with a sanding sponge. I then loosely colored all over it with a yellow prismacolor marker. Next, I drew a musical staff swirling down from the pointer finger to the wrist, getting larger as it went, with a dark gray marker. I wanted to do something musical since my mother is a professor of horn and also leads the family choir at church. I finally decided I would do something from church so I could write the words as well, and I found a site that had one of our Hymnal’s, Wonder Love and Praise, in it. I settled upon Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit because we always have so much fun when we sing it! So, I wrote the soprano and alto part out in a red marker, as well as the lyrics. It was hard to get everything to fit at the smallest part, so the measures are sort of long! Here’s the finished product:

Happy Mother’s Day Mom!! Sorry this is so late… So glad I get to see you Friday!

Day 39: Recorder Duet with Mom!

Posted by annagrace under Days 1-100

My Spring Break officially started today and although I don’t really get a break since I work Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, I decided to come home for a few days when I had the chance. So I immediately thought that I would do some sort of duet with my mom, who is a professor of Horn. I thought I would play recorder and she would play horn, but when I brought out my recorders, she immediately picked up the soprano one and started playing! It’s been 5 years since she played last, but it’s a fairly simple instrument so she caught back on quickly! We recorded a duet in a round of You Are My Hiding Place, which is a hymn we are singing tomorrow in church! I played alto recorder (the first part you hear) and Mom played soprano!

You Are My Hiding Place

Mom liked it so much on alto recorder, that I’m going to play it in the service tomorrow! (Mom does the family service music at our church) It was a lot of fun playing with my mom! We used to do stuff like that together a lot, but hadn’t done anything lately. I’m also excited to play in church, because I haven’t played anything since before I was diagnosed with RA! I’ll let you know how it goes!

Not sure what I’m doing for tomorrow’s blog yet. I might try and convince my mom to do something else with me! :)

Anna Grace

A couple hours ago, I was working on a completely different project for today when I heard a knock on my door. The birthday present I have been most excited about getting finally arrived!! I knew my mom was going to get me a nice recorder (not the cheapy ones you had to play in elementary school), but when I opened the box there were TWO RECORDERS!!! A Soprano one and an Alto one!!

TWO!!! I think I’m in love!

So, obviously, I immediately dropped the project I was working on (you’ll see it another day!) and started playing with my awesome recorders! I then realized, with the amazing software that is Garage Band, I could record a duet with myself!!! So I found some free recorder music and did it! It’s probably a lot slower than it’s supposed to be, but we have to remember that I’ve NEVER played an Alto Recorder before. The piece is Mayden Lane from Playford’s Dancing Master arranged by Penny Gardner. It’s just 35 sec. long, but it took a lot longer than that to record. There’s a few intonation issues, but I’m pretty pleased with it, overall, considering it was my first attempt!

Recorder Duet

Many, many, many more recorder tracks to come, I’m sure!

Thanks so much, mom!
