Day 335: Eric Berry Digital Portrait

Posted by annagrace under Days 301-365

It’s been almost a month since my last post, so I clearly didn’t make my deadline of finishing this 365 project by my birthday… What can I say, I have a life! But seriously, I’ve done several creative projects recently, but I just haven’t had the time to post them! At any rate, I think I’ll definitely have this done by May, but we’ll see. Moving on…

This creative project was my birthday present to my awesome boyfriend! His birthday was January 31 and we had just started dating the weekend before that. I don’t know about ya’ll, but I’m terrible about buying gifts for men… I never know what to get them! Plus, we were in that awkward period of the relationship where we were just getting to know each other, so a typical expensive boyfriend gift didn’t seem appropriate. Anyways, in one of our first conversations Chris had mentioned that he wasn’t a UT fan (why the hell not??!!!), but he really liked Eric Berry who went there, but now plays for the KC Chiefs! I agree that Eric Berry is amazing and was fortunate enough to see him on the bus at UT between classes once! So, I decided I would do something creative and FREE for Chris’s birthday and do a portrait of Eric Berry!

I decided to do a digital portrait so I could work on it while nannying on my iPad when the baby was asleep. I used the same app from my Dad’s portrait, Sketch Book Express, to draw this one. Here’s the original photograph of Eric Berry in all his muscular glory!

So I took that photo into Sketch Book Express and just started layering over it with the paintbrush tool. It took me maybe 3 or 4 hours over 2 days of nannying to complete it. Then I used the Over app like in my Typography post and added his name and nickname “The Fifth Dimension!” I have no idea why he’s named that, but I love the way it sounds, so whatever. :P Then I took that back into the Sketch Book Express app and wrote Happy Birthday and signed it! Here’s the finished product!

I’m extremely happy with the way this turned out! It was relatively easy to do with this app, but it looks like a unique piece of art! The best part is that Chris loved it! I’m pretty certain that’s why I’m his girlfriend! Well, that and our mutual love of Dr. Pepper! :P I love this drawing and will definitely be doing more like it!

Day 328: Digital Portrait of Dad

Posted by annagrace under Days 301-365

As you all know, when there comes an occasion where I need to give a gift, I usually try and make something rather than purchase it. This christmas was no exception. I made one thing for most of the people in my family that I will post at a later date, but for my dad, I decided to crochet him a hat! I found this really cool pattern that was rated as easy, so I thought, “I could do that!” NOPE. For reasons unknown to me, it ended up big enough to completely cover Bob Ross’ fro without smashing it down a bit and the bill could have doubled as a paddle.  So, after all that, I unraveled the whole thing and started over with a smaller crochet hook. Half-way through I realized I was going to have the same problem again!! So, the whole point of that story was that I ended up doing something completely different for my dad for Christmas: a digitally drawn portrait. It’s a completely random gift and I don’t know that he’ll ever print it out or anything, but I had fun doing it!

I’ve done digitally drawn portraits in Photoshop before, but I had never done one on my iPad. I had heard and seen pictures of these amazing images people created on their iPads, so I decided to give it a go!

This is the original picture I copied and it happens to be one of my favorite pictures of my dad!

I read some reviews about different free drawing apps and decided to use Sketch Book Express from Autodesk. Autodesk is the maker of AutoCad, a computer drafting program that the majority of designers, architects, and engineers use, so I figured it had to be good! And I’m glad I chose it, because it was so nice to use! I started by loading the original image into the background layer, then slowly layering colors onto a new layer using the paintbrush tool. In photoshop when doing this sort of thing, I could have it select exactly the color I needed, but SketchBook didn’t have that tool, so I changed around the CMYK levels until I got the colors I needed. I started with the face and hand, then the hair (this was more of an airbrush tool to soften it), then the shirt. I finished with the background, or a rough interpretation of that! And here’s the final product!

I totally meant to crop out the edges where I went outside the lines, but I sort of like the messy, artsy look of it! Overall, I’m really happy how this turned out! I sent it to dad, and he loves it too! It’s sort of goofy, but so is my dad, so it works. I think I will definitely be using that app again as well!

Day 302: Photoshopped Self-Portraits 4

Posted by annagrace under Days 301-365

I was bored the other day and didn’t have my computer, so I decided to use the Photoshop Express app for iPad and do some quick edits to a couple of pictures!

I started with this picture from the St. Patrick’s Day party I went to all decked out in green and orange.

Then I just amped up the contrast a bit.

And then I used the sketching technique (or the cutout? Can’t remember…) with the sort of yellowed effect (sorry my ipad doesn’t have enough charge at the moment to look and see what everything is called.).

Then I played with this picture of me with zombie make-up that my friend did.

I just made the colors a little more intense and made the corners fuzzy for added nostalgia!

The last picture I edited is the most recent picture of me. Lately I’ve been playing around with the natural curl/wave texture that my hair has, so this picture was to show that. Here’s the original.

I played with the contrast and did the cutout tool, then created this image with the 4 different colors.

I then took the original image and used the rainbow effect on it.

Then I played with the hue and gave it a fun border!

So that’s what I did on my iPad! Later that day when I was browsing the web, I found this site where you can make yourself into a Mad Men character!! Since I love that show so, so much, I decided to make a portrait of myself meeting Don Draper for a cocktail after work!!

I loved all the different options they had available for body shape, clothes, accessories, etc! I think it looks so much like me, don’t you?

Day 216(10 days late): Benny Photoshop Portraits

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

Today is one of my best friend in the whole wide world’s birthday! I’m working on something else for Whitney that is my present to her, but it’s not quite ready, so I thought I’d honor her birthday with fun portraits of her cat, Benny!

Whitney has always been a cat lover, but her love became much stronger when she met Ben! Ben came from an abusive house where they actually shot him with a bb gun! He was left with one ear and a lazy eye, all of which made Whitney love him and want to have and help him even more! So she adopted him and had her brother keep him until she was done with school and could live somewhere that allowed pets. Now that she is in her own place with a real job, Benny is the love of her life! Now, I am definitely not a cat person, mostly because I’m allergic to them… in fact, for the most part, I really dislike them, but it’s really hard not to love Ben! He’s just the most comical cat ever! Whit’s always calling me with tales of his antics and texting me crazy pictures of him, so I decided that I would photoshop some awesome pictures of Ben that she took, and make them hilarious!!

This first one is Benny walking on the log away from the camera. I thought it would be funny if he was glowing and had butterflies around him! This is particularly comical because I really don’t like butterflies! I mean, I think the can be very pretty in their natural state, but any time I see and item of clothing or jewelry that has those cheesy butterflies, I want to tear it apart! Whit knows this about me, and loves to point out butterflies in everything, so why not have crazy glowing butterflies and raise the level of tacky?

This next one I used the same glowing method and highlighted Ben and his crazy eyes! When Ben gets in his cat fits, he attacks his toys and/or the rug and gets this crazed look in his eye! haha

This last one is more of a nice one where I just cut out the green parts of the photo and pasted them onto a black and white copy. I adjusted the saturation a bit to make it stand out even more!

That shows Benny’s classy side!

Happy birthday, Whitney!!! Love you!

Anna Grace

Edited some more portraits in photoshop for this post! I will make this quick cause I am super tired!

This first image I just adjusted the color and then used the palette knife filter, then accented edges.

This next one I cut out my lips, changed the hue and saturation of everything else and used the film grain filter, then used the plastic wrap filter on my lips.

And this last one I made duotone, added a bit of noise to it, adjusted the contrast and did a very transparent gradient overlay to make the corners look a touch darker.

Yep. There you have it!

Day 135: Kat’s Graduation Portrait

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

So…… I’m in Chicago!!!!! My sister is graduating with her masters in horn performance this weekend, so me and the fam came up for it! As my present to her, I did a portrait of her and her horn. (FYI posting this on my phone, so sorry for any awkwardness!!)

Day 132: 2 Portraits

Posted by annagrace under Days 101-200

So, I’m currently working on two pretty big, important charcoal portraits that I’ve got to get done by Wednesday night before I go to Chicago (eeee!!! So excited!!), so I don’t really have anything to post tonight. Since these are pretty intense, I think I’m going to count them as 3 days worth of posts…

At any rate, both of these are gifts, so I don’t want to reveal too much of them to you just yet, but here’s a sneak peek of what I’ve done so far with the first one.

Sorry it’s so blurry! The second piece I only got to laying out my grid and doing a basic outline.

I may look like I haven’t done much, but it took awhile to lay it out and size everything! Plus, I got like 3 hours of sleep last night, so I’m calling it a night. I’ll do another update post tomorrow, and maybe I’ll be done with one of them!?

Day 93(3 days late): Charcoal Wedding Portrait!

Posted by annagrace under Days 1-100

I’ve just gotten back to my aunt and uncle’s condo after the wedding of their oldest son!! Matt has always been like a big brother to me, and I was so happy to see him harry an amazing girl like Clarissa!

Anyways, as our wedding present to them, my sister and I gave them a nicely framed portrait! The frame us the one from a few days ago that I painted, and Katherine paid for, and I decided to do a graphite/charcoal portrait of them! I’m posting this on my phone so I don’t have the original picture, but I will post it later!

The wedding was beautiful as was the bride! I’m so happy for you both! Welcome to the family Clarissa!

Day 89(1 day late): Photoshopped Self-Portraits

Posted by annagrace under Days 1-100

For yesterday’s post I decided to play around with photoshop! I just took 3 different pictures of myself and edited them. Here’s the original first one.

I took this photo a week or so ago when I was trying to get a good picture of my new glasses. I posted a similar photo on facebook as my profile picture, but I liked this one as well! So, I just took it into photoshop, lowered the saturation a little and cut out my lips (I was wearing my favorite hot pink lipstick, so I thought I’d highlight how bright it was, although in the final pic it’s a little less saturated, believe it or not!). I then unsaturated the background sans lips a lot more where you can just see a hint of the color, and used the water color feature on the background as well as the lips that I had pasted on another layer.

The next picture is another one I took that day.

For this one I cut out my lips again and lowered the saturation, used the glowing edges filter on the background and raised the saturation, and the accented edges filter on my lips.

The final picture is one I took yesterday after I dyed my hair (the first time I’ve done it myself since it’s been red and with a different product), so I could show it to my friend. I fail at taking pictures of myself with my phone, BTW. And I wasn’t wearing any make-up

So for this one, I just used the torn edges filter with the color I wanted selected, then filled in the white. I think it turned out pretty cool!

I heart photoshop!

BTW I should get caught up tomorrow on posts!!

Day 54(1 day late): Digital Self Portrait

Posted by annagrace under Days 1-100

Feeling much, much better today, although still taking it easy. I probably won’t get to today’s post, but such is life. For yesterday’s project, I decided to try another portrait using photoshop like I did the Elizabeth Taylor one. Apparently I’m on a portrait kick… sorry!

This week at my college is TAAST, or The Annual All-College Spring Thing! It’s a fun filled week that gets kicked off (literally… had to do it!) by kickball the first saturday and ends the next saturday with a massive Beaux Arts Ball! The week in between includes a ton of activities sponsored by the various organizations (Date Auction, Thumbtack Throwing Contest, Lego Building Contest, Installation Charrette etc.) as well as lectures and interview days where firms from all over come and interview students! As you can imagine, the interview days are pretty dang stressful, so the Beaux Arts Ball is always such a fun way to unwind. And I tell you what, us Architecture and Design kids know how to PARTY!! When we have time that is…

Every year there’s a different theme to the ball, which this year is “Inner Animal.” I’m not entirely sure what my inner animal is yet, but i’ll probably get “creative” and post the costume making process Friday! Anyways, my Freshman year the theme was “Red Carpet” and took place on the Tennessee Riverboat (that first link is me and me “dates” resting during the long walk to the boat). Sophomore year it was “Rave” (me and my raver buddies resting after intense techno dancing :D ) and took place at the Valarium. Junior year was “Prohibition” (aka flappers!!) at the Cider House which was added onto the Valrium. And last year was the “Monster” or “Avant Garde” Ball (basically Gaga style EVERYWHERE!!) at Sassy Ann’s! I do believe that this last one was the most epic! Here’s just a few pics…

From top left: Lauren as the White Queen, Alyssa with extra long hair, Lauren B avant garde devil :) , Brian and Whitney, looking down at the monsters, Monster King, Perrin as Queen of Hearts (who was crowned Monster Queen!), and Me as a Gaga poof monster!!

Well that was a really long explanation for  today’s project, but at any rate I’ve got the Beaux Arts Ball on my brain! In honor of that, I decided to do a portrait of this picture that I happened to drunkenly/fantastically take at last year’s ball.

I love this picture! I thought it would be perfect for using the same technique as day 53 since it’s already so blurry and fuzzy. Here’s what I came up with.

Side by side for comparison

Okay, I have to admit that I was really struggling with the poofy parts of my outfit and the poof in my hair, so I just cut those out of the original image and added filters to them rather than actually drawing them with the paint brush tool. I didn’t feel like spending that much time on them… I think I like the way the Elizabeth Taylor portrait turned out better than this one, but I spent a lot less time on this. Overall, I think it’s not bad! I’m pretty certain it’s going to become my facebook profile picture ASAP!

I’ll try and get to today’s project actually on today, but no guarantees!
