Create A Day

One creative project every day for a year

It’s been several days since I posted, but I’ve been pretty stressed out and I just needed a few days to unwind a bit. I don’t have a legitimate excuse, but I’ll try and bust out some posts later this week.

As you may recall, I have been spending the past several posts counting down music from the years I have been alive. I’ve been choosing one top 100 hit (typically using this list) from each year and recording it quickly and simply (usually) a cappella. I’ve gone all the way from 2010 and have finally reached the year of my birth, 1988! Because we’re at the end of this theme I was doing, I wanted to make this last one special. If you look at the list for 1988, there are several good songs on there. I thought about a bunch of them… I even contemplated rick-rolling you people, but luckily for you, I decided against it. :) Finally, I came across number 32 on the list, Don’t Worry, Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin, and decided it had to be done. But, I couldn’t just sing the melody a cappella… I had to do all of the parts!! So after searching around for awhile for some sheet music, I came across this nifty little site that helps you listen to every individual part and sing along with it! I just listened to each part and recorded myself singing it with headphones in! The bass part was way too low for me to sing so I sang it up an octave and then brought it down in Garage Band. The rhythm of it was kind of crazy, so it’s not exactly right in some spots, but I think it turned out alright. And since I recorded each track individually, there are some places where all of the parts don’t line up exactly, but I think it turned out really good!

Don’t Worry, Be Happy (1988)

This was a lot of fun to do!! I think was a great way to finish off this recap of my life through music!

The top hit I chose for 1989 was the New Kids On The Block hit U Got It (The Right Stuff)! There is something so great about NKOTB… The very late 80s into the 90s and into the early 00s were the time of the boy band, and they were one of the greats. The fact that they got together with the Backstreeet Boys and went on tour recently is so amazing, too!! That is any girl of the 90s dream come true! I just recorded this a cappella in one take!

Love this song! Oh so cheesy, but oh so great!!

Day 247(16 days late): Vogue (1990)

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

I was trying really, really hard to not repeat artists in this little top 100 countdown of my musical past, but when I realized that the number 1 song in 1990 was Madonna’s Vogue, I had to do it! As we all know by now, I love love love Madonna! The way she has reinvented herself over the years so many times is just amazing, but her vogue era is probably one of my favorites! Anyone who knows me well and has gone out to the local bar, Hanna’s, knows that when this song comes on, I am allllllll over it! Singing every word, even in the sort of rap part! It’s just so fabulous!! It’s also a favorite one to car dance too! (I’m talking to you, Jen!!)

At any rate, I just sang this a cappella with the main melody and then added the harmony. Love this song!!!

Vogue (1990)

I’m so happy  I did this song! It has made today/tonight soooo much better!! And what a great way to round out the 90s!

Day 248(16 days late): Losing My Religion (1991)

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

For my top 100 pick from 1991 I chose Losing My Religion by REM. I love this song and this artistic video! I decided to use ukulele to mimic the mandolin, without actually having to learn the solo parts. I tried to record the uke and voice separately at first, but I was having a hard time getting everything to line up. I ended up just playing ukulele and singing at the same time, which resulted in a lot of awkward timing… but my hands were getting tired, so I just left it as is!

Losing My Religion (1991)

I think all things considered this turned out ok. I’d like to take another shot at it some other time!

Day 247(17 days late): Baby Got Back (1992)

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

Yep. You read that title right. I covered Sir Mix-A-Lot’s Baby Got Back! When I saw that it was one of the top 100 songs from 1992, I decided it had to be done!! It’s probably the most inappropriate song I have ever done or will ever do, but it’s so much fun! Every person around my age knows all the words to this (or at least thinks they do) and will continually jump up and down and belt out every last filthy/suggestive word when it comes on! It’s also a top karaoke choice, so it can’t be too bad, right?! All I have to say is, I can guarantee that I had know idea what any of these lyrics meant until I was much older!

So, any good rap song starts with a good beat and a loop. I laid the thumping bass line down with my ukulele, which just succeeded in making it extra white and nerdy! But anywho, I recorded that and looped it so my fingers wouldn’t fall off! Then I recorded the “Oh my God, Becky… ” intro and lined up the “bass” to start at the right time. Then, I recorded the verses… and it went terribly! I have mastered the first verse, no problem, but the second verse messed me up soooo bad!! So, I stumbled through it and ultimately got a decent take…. but this just proves, yet again, that I am a ridiculously white chick (with no butt at all, I might add) who shouldn’t be rapping. I knew there was no way I would be able to get all the words, so I did as best as I could. Finally I recorded the little extra vocal parts that are thrown in here and there, and I was done! Brace yourself for the hilarity….

Baby Got Back (1992)

Sometimes doing something like this is necessary to remain sane! And I try not to take myself so seriously all the time. :D Hope I put a little laughter into your day!

Day 246(18 days late): No Rain (1993)

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

For 1993′s top 100 song, I chose Blind Melon’s No Rain! Don’t you just love that video? I wanted to dress like a bee and dance in a field when I first saw it, and I can honestly say that I still want to do that now at 23! The song is pretty killer too! I found some fairly easy chords to this, so I decided to record it with ukulele!

No Rain (1993)

Just did this in one take, so it’s not perfect, but I’m fairly happy with it!

Day 245(18 days late): Dreams (1994)

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

For my top 100 pick of 1994 I chose The Cranberries hit Dreams. As I think I’ve already mentioned, I love The Cranberries! Her voice is just so haunting and beautiful.

So I decided to sing this in 2 parts, duh! It’s definitely necessary! Unfortunately, I also decided to sing the sort of Native American chant at the end, and I had a hard time finding the notes…. and I think I was trying too hard to sound like him and the lead singer. So, just sort of ignore the end! haha

Dreams (1994)

A quick, not-so-hot take of an excellent 90s song… but it will do for now!

Day 244(19 days late): Kiss From A Rose (1995)

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

Moving on in the walk down my musical past, the top 100 song I chose for 1995 is Kiss From A Rose by Seal. I cannot find the words to express to you how much I absolutely love this song! Seals voice is so smooth and rich like a good dark chocolate and it melts itself into this song so well. I used to listen to this song on repeat when I was growing up, and still to this day when it comes on the radio I crave a second, third or millionth listen to it. In fact when I recorded this, I probably listened to the original 5 times, just bouncing around my apartment belting it! :D Any ways, I thought about recording multiple parts to this, but realized that if I am ever going to catch up on days, I cannot do everything I want. And, if I was going to do all the parts, I knew I would have devoted the whole night to it to make it as good as it deserved to be. So, I ended up recording it a cappella, but with a lot of energy, cause that song is just so good!!

Kiss From A Rose (1995)

Maybe someday I will really devote the time to this song that I want to (possibly even bust out the oboe??), but for now I think this version turned out pretty good!

Anna Grace

This stupid flare up caused me to miss another day yesterday… and I looked up how far behind I am and it’s an astonishing 20 days!!!!! Aaahhhh!! Life has a way of messing up plans sometimes, I guess.

At any rate, for 1996 I chose Tracy Chapman’s Give Me One Reason. I found an awesome tutorial for the chords and strumming pattern for this on ukulele, so I decided to use it to amp up the bluesy-ness! I loved this song when it came out, and I still do! I recorded the ukulele part first and looped it (sore hands still from the RA flare up), then recorded myself singing over it.

Give Me One Reason (1996)

This was a fun song to record and I’m glad, ultimately, that I missed another day to record this today, because I don’t think it would have turned out as well!

Day 241(? days late): Foolish Games (1997)

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

So, I have gotten even more days behind… I went to Atlanta on Friday, then to Chattanooga on Saturday for my friend’s wedding (Shout out to Perrin and Kevin… Congrats! It was so beautiful and unique!), then back to Atlanta after the wedding late that night, then finally back to Knoxville Sunday night! So, needless to say, I didn’t get any posts in. And then this week I’ve been super busy and trying to fight off a Rheumatoid Arthritis flare up that I knew was coming… then today I failed that battle and got hit… hard. I’ve been in bed all day and on the phone with my rheumatologist to try and get an appointment, and he finally just called in a prescription for me. It seems to be helping a bit, but because of the flare up, I ended up resting/napping my entire day off instead of catching up on posts! At any rate, I don’t know how many days behind I am at this point because I don’t have the energy to look for my project calendar, but I will try and catch up ASAP… well when I feel better!

1997 was an amazing year in music in my opinion! I had a really hard time picking just one song, so I ended up just picking whatever my mouse landed on! And that song was Foolish Games by Jewel! I love her voice! It rides the line of a yodel sometimes and is sooo interesting! So, as always, I recorded this a cappella in one take.

Foolish Games (1997)

Enjoy! I am headed to bed…
