Day 320: In Between

Posted by annagrace under Days 301-365

I recorded this and couple of other songs about a week ago, but kept forgetting to post them! At any rate, this song is In Between by Linkin Park. I really like this song because it’s much softer and calmer than the majority of LP songs, but still stays true to who they are.

I searched a bit for some chords and couldn’t really find any that worked for ukulele, so I adapted some I found to be easier. Just recorded this in one take.

In Between

I think it turned out pretty good! I was thinking about going to Market Square sometime and playing my uke and singing, and I think this one would be a good one to add to the mix! :)

A couple more posts coming up tonight, so keep your eye out for them!

Day 314: Untitled Work in Progress

Posted by annagrace under Days 301-365

The other day I was flipping through one of my old notebooks and came across something written in the margins. It said, “You’re going to blab it to the world with the expression on your face.” Now, I have no idea why I wrote that down years ago, but that phrase inspired me to try and write my own song. I’ve never really written a song on my own, so I’m not sure how good it is, but it’s been interesting trying to piece lyrics, vocals and chords together. This is definitely a work in progress… I don’t even have a title for it yet! But I thought I would share where I am now.

I started by just writing phrases and ideas that I wanted to include in the lyrics. I had a specific rhythm for the verses that I knew wanted to do immediately, so I fit the words into that and then went from there! The chorus was a little bit harder, but I knew I wanted it to be much smoother/slower than the verse, so I played around a bit until I liked it. Keep in mind that when I originally wrote out these lyrics it was a night that I couldn’t sleep at like 4 am, so I couldn’t really sing them for fear of waking my roommate. I ended up doing a whispered recording of it just so I would possibly remember then rhythm the next day. Then today, I started singing it a few times a cappella and recording it until I liked the flow of it. Then I got out my ukulele and figured out a good key and chords to go with it! This recording is just a bare bones single track with very little uke (my fingers were getting really sore from playing through it so many times!!) just to sort of document my progress, but I think you can get an idea of how the song will be.

I’m not sure how I feel about the bridge just yet, but I’m happy with the progress I’ve made today. I don’t expect this to be a chart topper or anything, just something that’s purely for my amusement, but I would appreciate any feedback! I’m hoping to eventually add a full ukulele part, harmonies, drums, etc. to this, but that’s definitely a ways away. Hope you like my spur of the moment creation!

Day 310: Rainbow Connection

Posted by annagrace under Days 301-365

I don’t know about you all, but growing up I LOVED all of the Muppet movies and shows! I used to watch the movies on repeat when I was at my grandparents’ house! Mimom (my dad’s mom) loved, and still loves, puppets and writes a puppet skit for Vacation Bible School every year! She’s so creative :) Anyways, I decided to show my love for the Muppets today by doing a cover of Rainbow Connection!

I found an instrumental arrangement for it on Ukulele Hunt, but realized very quickly that I couldn’t play all of those notes at once! So I just recorded the melody on one track and the chords on another!

Rainbow Connection

Pretty simple, but fun! And definitely brought back memories of my childhood… :)

Day 308: You’re Still The One

Posted by annagrace under Days 301-365

So, you all know that I don’t like Country music. You’re probably looking at that title up there, thinking “isn’t that a Shania Twain song, and isn’t she country??” Both those statements are correct, but I’m a firm believer in making exceptions to every rule and keeping an open mind about things. So when I saw Shania’s You’re Still The One in my 98-99 Pop Hits book, I decided to go for it! Plus, I don’t know a single girl who grew up in the 90s who didn’t rock out to a little Shania at one point!

So, I just did a quick rendition of this in one take! Just me and my good old ukulele!

You’re Still The One

A pretty easy song to do without anything fancy going on in my cover, but I’m alright with it! Now don’t be looking forward to anymore country coming from me… :)

Day 307: Frozen

Posted by annagrace under Days 301-365

As you all should know by now, I love me some Madonna! I’ve covered several of her songs already, but I can never get enough of her, so here’s one more! This song is my second favorite off of her Ray of Light album (other than the title track), Frozen! I always loved this video! I thought it was really cool the way she danced, so I tried to dance like that and I really wanted henna tattoos!! haha

I found the chords/lyrics in that same 98-99 Pop Hits piano book that a few other covers have come from, but I just adapted them for ukulele! In this extremely stripped down version, I recorded 2 tracks. The first one is the uke chords and melody, and the second is the harmony and the little diddy on ukulele at the end!

This is the first recording I’ve done in the new place and it’s interesting how different the acoustics are here! More echoing I think. I was also standing in the corner with my computer and music propped up on the walls, so it probably echoed even more! If I could just get rid of the buzzing from my laptop, we’d be golden! Doing this really makes me want that album again! I might have to go to McKay tomorrow…

Day 306: Drift Away

Posted by annagrace under Days 301-365

So… I lied to you all. I promised more posts the same day as the last post, and failed to do so. And that was over 2 weeks ago!! All I can say is, I’ve been nuts trying to pack for this move, then I got sick, then I moved and didn’t have internet… until today, so here we are! So, I’ll do at least 2 posts tonight, and maybe be done with this project sometime before Christmas…

At any rate, this creative project is a cover of Drift Away by Dobie Gray, or for you youngins out there, by Uncle Kracker, who did a cover in 2003. One of these versions of this song comes on the radio at work just about every day (we listen to B97.5 most of the time… no repeats throughout the day, but you sure do play exactly the same songs every single day at the same exact time!) and my manager commented that he really loved the song and never realized that Uncle Kracker didn’t originally sing it. This is coming from someone who listens to mostly country, so I try and cut him a little slack… Just kidding, love you, Herbie! Anyways, after he said that, I happened to come across some uke chords for it, so I went with it! This was right at the beginning of my cold, so forgive my frog-like voice!

Drift Away

I recorded this in 2 tracks in order to get the harmonies in the little riff (I’m not talented enough to play both at the same time :( ) and to add the (super awkward) clapping.

At least one more post tonight, I PROMISE!!!

Day 304: Rolling in the Deep

Posted by annagrace under Days 301-365

I was perusing some ukulele chord/tab sites the other night and came across this amazing instrumental version of Adele’s Rolling in the Deep! I don’t know about you, but I’m a tad sick of Adele since all her songs are on the radio ALL THE TIME!!! But, I think that this ukulele version is worth sharing AND embedding into this post so you all can see how awesome this guy is!

At any rate, I’m nowhere near good enough to play the whole fancy version he tabbed out, so I ended up just recording the chords in the background and the melody over top of that!

Rolling in the Deep

Clearly not as fancy as him, but I liked just doing something on uke without singing for a change! Maybe one day I can rock out like that, but at the moment, my poor joints won’t allow it… :( That and I FAIL at strumming. But hey, it’s all in good fun, so who cares?

Day 303: Ruby Tuesday

Posted by annagrace under Days 301-365

I’ve got a few things to post tonight, so I’m going to make this quick!

This post is quick cover of the Rolling Stones’ Ruby Tuesday! I found the ukulele chords on one of my favorite ukulele sites and went from there! I had to sing the chorus and versus in two different octaves to fit my range.

Ruby Tuesday

I have NO CLUE what that weird noise in the background is… maybe the AC? It’s hot, yall!! Anyways, I really love this song and I hope my quick take of it does it justice. One of my favorite mixed CDs from my friend Brian has this on it!

Look out for at least one more post tonight!

Day 298: Fireflies

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

This post is a quick rendition of Owl City’s Fireflies with ukulele! For a long time the beginning of this song was my ringtone because it’s just so fun and it was something I knew I would be able to hear in most circumstances. I had to stop using it because I got sick of it, but I think I might use it again since I love it so much!

I found the chords on my favorite ukulele chord resource site! I really do love that site… I could find enough tunes on there to finish my blog if I really wanted to… but I’m not going to do just uke songs! Anyways, I found the chords and ended up just recording it in one shot! Obviously, this is a waaaayyyy simplified version of the song, but I still like the words and melody.

I’m pretty happy with it, especially considering that I didn’t spend much time on it!! I’ve got a few more posts coming up later tonight, including a special song with my mom for the 300th post!! Stay tuned!

Day 295: Broadway

Posted by annagrace under Days 201-300

The other day I found out that one of the bands I really liked in the 90s, the Goo Goo Dolls, was going to be at Riverbend this year in Chattanooga!! I’m still debating whether I’m going to be able to go or not, but in the mean time I decided to do a quick cover of their song, Broadway!

I just found some fairly simple guitar chords and quickly adapted them for ukulele! The chords I found in a good key were missing some parts, so I just sort of made it up! This is probably one of the fastest recordings I’ve ever done, with just one run through after getting the chords and then one recorded take!

This was definitely a quick and dirty take of this song, but I love the Goo Goo Dolls so much, I thought it was necessary! I hope I can see them, but there are a few things I’ve got to work out first! I’ll definitely let you know if I do go!
